Who cares for the carers

Theresa Mitchell Season 2 Episode 13

Ronnie Benbow founded the Carers Foundation after seeing the lack of support for carers.
She says:
Did you know there are children as young as EIGHT years old caring for their Mum, Dad, Brother, or Sister?
I am particularly passionate about younger carers from the age of 13. These young people do not get a choice to be a carer, and the incredible stress and anxiety they endure leads to severe depression and mental health issues. We need to support these incredible young people, as they are highly unidentified in the community and receive very little support.

I am passionate about being an advocate for unpaid caregivers of all ages, backgrounds, and circumstances in the community.

There are over 3 million unpaid carers in Australia, and they save the Australian economy $62 BILLION dollars annually. Carers often work 24/7 without pay, or time off, usually not for weeks, but for years on end.
We have identified the need to support these carers through health promotion as their own health is a major issue not being recognised. These issues include health and well-being issues, social isolation, physical injuries, frustration, depression, financial hardship, and extreme stress and exhaustion.
